YELA didn't just appear—it exploded into existence from decades of faith, resilience, and an unshakeable belief in what young people can achieve when given the right tools and unwavering support. For years, our founder witnessed a recurring gap: brilliant young minds were being told to "wait their turn" while the world desperately needed their innovation now.
The Visionary Behind the Torch
Founded by Cheryl Ellis-Taylor, YELA is the living, breathing extension of over half a century of business wisdom. As a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Cheryl brought more than just academic knowledge to the table; she brought a heart for service and a Master’s in Leadership & Management. Where others saw limitations in the youth, Cheryl saw limitless potential waiting to be unlocked.
She created YELA to be the "Launchpad"—a rocket ship designed to propel young visionaries into their purpose.
Building the Architecture of Action
To turn this vision into a reality, Cheryl partnered with LaTia Brooks, a powerhouse business strategist known as the "Architect of Action". Together, they moved beyond "fluff" and summer camp mentalities to build a hands-on incubator. They were joined by Nevaeh Griffin, our Youth Ambassador, who serves as the official voice and living proof of what happens when a young person is empowered to lead.
Our "Why"
We saw the frustration of ambitious teens and the uncertainty of adults ready to pivot. We witnessed the "side hustle" struggle and the "notebook full of ideas" that never saw the light of day.
